NEW ZEALAND

Lake Wanaka - a tourist destination and ski resort

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Lake Wanaka is one of New Zealand's most popular tourist and ski resorts. The Wanaka Township is set on the edge of Lake Wanaka. In winter it is a skiing centre and in summer people come to see the lake and take part in outdoor activities.

The surrounding region is one of the most popular places for skiing, snowboarding and heli skiing in New Zealand. The greatest concentration of New Zealand's commercial ski fields are located around Queenstown - Coronet Peak and The Remarkables; and Wanaka - Treble Cone, Cardrona and the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area. Wanaka is located only 117km from Queenstown.

Wanaka Township

Wanaka is a laid back town in sharp contrast to the packaged tourist town of Queenstown. The Wanaka township has everything within walking distance, including retail shops and places to dine : rates are a little lower than Queenstown but still reflect the town's resort status. Durring the winter months, Wanaka relative calm is shattered by the arrival of skiers and snowboarders. For Snow Reports click here

Treble Cone Alpine Resort

Treble Cone is the largest ski area in the South Island with plenty of exhilarating skiing and snowboarding terrain. Spread over three large basins, there are trails to suit all ages and abilities, along with spectacular views across Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring. Treble Cone has a new up-town café and bar facilities.

Cardrona Alpine Resort

Cardrona a popular commercial field which is easily accessible from both Wanaka and Queenstown. A wide area of the mountain is serviced by chairlifts so access is easy and queues are rare. On-mountain facilities include three restaurants, a cafeteria, shop, hire facilities and a workshop. Cardrona has an established reputation as a family oriented field.

Heli-skiing and Heli-boarding

Lake Wanaka is a great place to try heliskiing and heliboarding. The heliskiing season normally runs from July to early October. Provided you are an intermediate skier and are reasonably proficient at skiing powder you should be able to pass the ability questionnaire, but at around NZ$735 a day it isn't for everyone.

Snow Farm

Snow Farm, situated along the Cardona Valley Road, 35kms from Wanaka and 55kms from Queenstown, is one of the best Cross Country Skiing fields in the Southern Hemisphere. Snow Farm boasts over 50kms of groomed trails and caters for all. No matter what your age or ability, there are many trails for you to enjoy.

Puzzling World

The Great Maze” is the first of the world’s “modern-style” great mazes. It is two storeys high and has 1.5 kilometres of confusing passages. “Puzzling World” is full of eccentric shaped buildings and puzzling rooms. Some are world unique and the others could be world best!
