Based
at Temple Basin Ski Area, the New Zealand Snow Safety Institute
runs a series of courses throughout the year on aspects of climbing, mountaineering
and mountain safety. Some of the courses are for skiers, climbers
and trampers who want to improve their understanding of the mountain
environment in order to be safer in it. Other courses are for
experienced skiers who wish to train as ski patrollers and gain
the Canterbury Ski Association qualifications.
All courses are led by experienced, qualified instructors.
All Courses Weather Permitting
All participants should carry a first aid kit.

Course Details
Advanced Emergency Medical Care
Aimed to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care skills.
Ideally suited for those working in an outdoor or adventure based
environment. This course is conducted in Christchurch City at the
Shirley Community Centre. Accommodation and meals are not included.

Avalanche 1 Course
This Avalanche Programme is jointly administered by Otago
Polytechnic and the New Zealand
Mountain Safety Council and is the nationally recognised training programme for professionals working in the field.

Avalanche Awareness
This course is an ideal introduction for those wishing
to gain a basic level of understanding about avalanche safety.
Content covers terrain, weather, avalanche classification
and formation, snow pack analysis, route finding and emergency
procedures.

5-Day Backcountry Skills for Climbers and Trampers
This course is designed for climbers and trampers
who wish to develop experience and technical expertise in
the mountains.

the back country.

7-Day Multi Skill Mountaineering Course
An intensive alpine course covering all aspects of
the Snow Caving and Winter Survival, Avalanche Awareness,
Risk Management and Alpine Climbing courses, as well
as ropes, knots and anchors. An excellent opportunity
to study the alpine environment during different snow
and weather conditions.

Mountain Skills - Level I
An introduction to the basic equipment and techniques
employed in an alpine environment. Use and care of equipment,
ropes, knots, anchors, abseiling and belaying will be
covered.

Mountain Skills - Level II
Designed for those people who wish to extend their basic
mountaineering skills. This course revises anchors and covers
methods for multiple anchors, abseiling past a knot, Z-pully
raises, assisted hoists, lowering on an improvised stretcher, escaping the system and short roping.

Mountain Skills - Level III
This course is for the more advanced mountaineer. It
combines previously learnt skills and places them in a practical
environment to extend even further their mountaineering skills.
