MOUNT POTTS SKI AREA New Zealand

Overview - including information on the filming of The Lord of the Rings

Image of HelicopterMount Potts Backcountry skiing area combines helicopter access with skiing and snowboarding on some of the best powder and terrain New Zealand has to offer.

SOUTHERN ALPS HELISKI . The ski terrain is located in the peaks of the Two Thumb and Cloudy Peak ranges, a short flight across the valley from Mt.Potts Lodge. These mountains are among the highest permitted for heliskiing in New Zealand, giving long runs and fantastic snow quality.

HELI PARK NEW ZEALAND. The skiing terrain consists of three huge basins and is the highest in New Zealand at 2200 metres. Mount Potts is a regular haunt for the Burton US team and the Rossignol freeride team.

Image of TerrainClients are lifted from Mount Potts Alpine Lodge by helicopter and back at the end of the day. The skiing area's location right at the heart of the Southern Alps means it always captures good snow from the reliable alpine Nor'wester. The large field consists of three basins, with terrain ranging from steeps to mellow, with lots of cliffs and chutes between.

There is a warm lunch hut, where clients pause for their lunch and hot drinks part way through the day. Clients at Mount potts are also trained in the technique of avalanche transceiver searching, and are guided by qualified guides.

Bookings are limited, so pre booking is essential.

The Mount Potts Alpine Lodge down at the base features good food and plenty of entertainment with a fully licensed bar, pool table, playstation and plenty of books and videos. Wax your board or skis in the evening in the tech room. Snacks, chocolate and essentials such as sunscreen and wax are also available. The rooms are simple, but warm and comfortable and all bedding and towels are supplied

Image of TerrainThe Two Towers - The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, New Line Cinema (2001) - Mount Potts is featured heavily as the location for Edoras. A large set was built on the station over a period of 11 months. This group took advantage of the lodge accommodation to house the feed the construction workers during the set building, then for the horse-riders during filming.

Mount Potts was one of the many film locations used for the filming of 'Lord of the Rings'.
