Overview Information

Trout and Salmon Fishing

General Information

Trout Fishing Seasons

Fishing and weather conditions can vary from year to year and district to district, but in general you will find:

Spring - October, November, December
This is one of the best times for fishing streams when all rivers are open after being closed for winter protection. Rivers are less crowded, water levels are high and the fish are fresh, resulting in larger fish being caught in bigger numbers.

Summer - January, February
All waters are open and dry fly fishing is at its best. However, this is also a very popular time when large numbers of fishers crowd the waterways and often that "get away from it all" experience is missing.

Autumn or Fall - March, April
This is one of the best times to visit when river fishing because of the high fish numbers. Weather is typically settled with cool evenings and clear sunny days.

Winter - May, June, July, August, September
This is a truly great time for the hardy angler to enjoy the world class spawning runs in the North Island, particularly the regions around Lake Taupo and Rotorua.

Recommended Trout Tackle

Weight 6-8 fly rods with floating and sink tip lines are recommended for most regions. For stream fishing lightweight waders are recommended.

NOTE: Felt-sole boots are now prohibited. (Updated April 2009)

Fishing Licenses

Licenses are available throughout New Zealand and cost ranges from around NZ$18.50 per day to NZ$92.00 for a whole-season license. A fishing license may be used in any area of New Zealand except Lake Taupo. To fish Lake Taupo you must buy a local license which is NZ$15.50 per 24-hour, NZ$34.00 per week and NZ$75.50 for a season.
